Frankenmuth, Michigan, is known for its Bavarian charm, and at the center of it all is the Bavarian Inn Holz Brücke Covered Bridge. Spanning the Cass River, this iconic bridge has been a part of Frankenmuth’s landscape for 45 years. More than just a structure, it stands as a piece of the town’s history, a symbol of craftsmanship, and a reminder of Frankenmuth’s commitment to tradition.
In 2024, the Holz Brücke Covered Bridge celebrates its 45th anniversary, and the town is excited to honor this milestone. The bridge was conceived by Tiny Zehnder, a visionary leader of the Bavarian Inn Corporation. As Frankenmuth experienced growth in the late 1970s, Tiny recognized the need for expanded parking to accommodate the increasing number of visitors to the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. Rather than just building a simple bridge, Tiny wanted something that would honor Frankenmuth’s German roots and bring a sense of old-world craftsmanship to the town.
Construction began in 1979, led by famed bridge builder Milton Graton, who was known for his expertise in covered bridges. The entire project was completed with meticulous care, using traditional hand tools and methods to ensure the bridge’s durability and authenticity. It took a team of dedicated workers two years to complete the construction, with the bridge eventually being moved into place in January 1980—an incredible feat that required twin oxen, Buck and Bright, to pull the 230-ton structure across the river.
The bridge’s stats are impressive: it’s 239 feet long, 28 feet wide, and stands 14 feet high at its tallest point. Made from Douglas fir timber, the bridge was designed to last for generations, and its covered design not only protects it from weather but also harkens back to the traditional covered bridges of Europe. The wooden beams are secured with wooden pegs—no metal fasteners were used—showcasing a level of craftsmanship that’s rare today.
Today, the Holz Brücke isn’t just a bridge—it’s a part of Frankenmuth’s identity. Locals and visitors alike can’t help but stop and admire its wooden beams, take photos, or walk across it to soak in the views of the river and the town. The bridge has also become a key point of connection for the nearby Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Bavarian Inn Lodge, where countless families have made memories.
To mark this milestone, the Covered Bridge Shop, located on Main Street directly in front of the bridge, will be hosting a FREE family-fun ‘Bridge Birthday Bash’ on September 28, 2024, from 12-6 PM. The event will feature live family-friendly music, food trucks, outdoor games, and a bounce house for the kids. You can also grab a drink at the outdoor bar and enjoy it while soaking in the scenic views of the bridge and river. It’s the perfect afternoon for families and visitors to come together and celebrate this beloved landmark.
The festivities aren’t just confined to that day. Visitors will be able to stop by the Covered Bridge Shop throughout the year to find exclusive bridge-related items, making it easy to take home a piece of Frankenmuth’s history. Whether you’re local or just passing through, the Bridge Birthday Bash is the perfect opportunity to join the community in celebrating this iconic structure’s 45th year.
As we mark this special anniversary, we’re reminded that this bridge is more than just wood—it’s a part of the town’s story, built with intention and care.
